Videos of Hawaiian Fish

Hawaiian fish are remarkably diverse, reflecting the islands’ extreme isolation and unique ecosystems. About a quarter of reef fish species in Hawaii are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth. Notable species include Potter’s Angelfish, Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse, and Millet-seed Butterflyfish. Hawaiian freshwater streams are also home to endemic gobies such as the Nōpili, which can climb waterfalls, and the ‘O‘opu nākea, an important food source for early Hawaiians. These fish have evolved specific adaptations, enriching Hawaii’s aquatic biodiversity and making its underwater habitats globally significant.
