Videos of Kahoolawe

Welcome to our collection of videos of Kahoolawe. Hawai’i’s relationship with the military has been troubled by the U.S. Navy’s bombing of the island for target practice. Perhaps it’s not the military’s strong suit to appreciate the cultural implications of its presence and activities here. But the bombing of Kahoolawe over the course of many years was a massive and unconscionable insult to the values that governed the traditional relationship of Hawaiians to their environment. The restoration of this hapless island is symbolic of the restoration of the Hawaiian nation itself. Everything means something, and for the military to blithely bomb the place was a big slap in a once-lovely face, and an insult to local sensitivities that are poised on the razor’s edge. But with all of that said, perhaps it’s a good place to begin to rebuild the relationship.
