Videos of Hawaiian Whales

Hawaii Inside

Hawaiian waters are home to a remarkable diversity of whale species. The most famous is the humpback whale (koholā), which migrates annually from Alaska to breed, give birth, and nurse calves, with peak viewing from January to March. Other species regularly seen year-round include false killer whales, short-finned pilot whales, melon-headed whales, and pygmy killer whales. In total, more than 18 types of whales—both toothed and baleen—have been documented in Hawaiian waters. These whales play vital roles in Hawaiian culture and marine ecosystems, attracting visitors and supporting local conservation efforts.
