Videos of Molokai

Hawaii Inside

Welcome to our collection of videos of Molokai. The haunting beauty of this place reflects the tragic story of Molokai’s Father Damien and his Kalaupapa settlement that unfolded like a psychic drama enacted in imitation of Christ. In the Christian tradition of succor for the outcast, Damien embraced the sufferers of leprosy, this most loathsome of diseases, as holy men throughout history have–cradling its sufferers in their arms and kissing their open sores. Father Damien’s role in erasing the Western stigma of leprosy as moral retribution and countering the Hawaiian view of leprosy as genocide remains his outsized Christian legacy. The public nature of his martyrdom caused the whole world to understand what it was to be a leper, signifying what the open sores of one man might mean to all men, for “Among all the world’s leprosy victims, Damien was uniquely the Leper of all the world.” It also gave the world a magnificent example of the aloha spirit, which Molokai embodies as the Last Hawaiian Place.
